Our Curriculum

The curriculum here at Wroughton Academies is an avenue for discovery, knowledge and understanding of the wider world.  We use clear purpose, audience, engagement, interaction and oracy to drive learning of a wider curriculum with a presentation-based outcome – a display of knowledge and celebration of learning through hard-work, courage and academic performance.

In order to achieve this, we focus on four whole afternoons each week, driving progress, continuity of learning and a depth of knowledge. Children study the same subject over these afternoons to ensure a real depth and continuity of focus, but also with a clear purpose. The final afternoon is prioritised as Physical Education which our classroom teachers lead with the specialist support of sports coaches. For the full curriculum map  Click here

Our curriculum is driven by staff and children and celebrated with parents.  See our most recent curriculum celebration newsletter:

Early Years Foundation Stage

Four guiding principles should shape practice in early years settings. These are:

• Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.

• Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.

• Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers ,

• Children develop and learn in different ways  and at different rates.

Children in Nursery and Reception complete the EYFS curriculum and work towards achieving the Early Learning Goals. This is achieved through a curriculum focused on seven areas of learning: communication and language, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, expressive arts and design. For more information for parents can be found at https://www.foundationyears.org.uk/eyfs-statutory-framework/ or speak to Mrs Oxborough

Children in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 all engage with our very structured and rigorous ReadwriteInc. Phonics Programme. As well as regular teaching of the necessary decoding skills to read, we also regularly assess children (every 8 weeks), move their groups based on prior attainment and ensure they are working towards a national level of achievement.  We also provide free resources to parents to work at home with children.

We have a wonderfully interactive and purposeful English Curriculum at Wroughton Academies, which has a clear structure for children to learn how to develop their spoken language, understanding and comprehension into written work.  This curriculum stretches from nursery to year 6, so children have continuity in their learning and all lessons build on previous learning.  For more information see – http://www.talk4writing.co.uk/

From nursery to Year 6 we follow the National Curriculum for mathematics and with clear planned progression at each stage. We have very higher expectations in regards to children knowing all of their times-tables by the end of Year 4, we focus on mastery principles and also ensure that there is a high early focus on number, but children are able to calculate and reason at a more complex level as their knowledge develops.
